By then I have calculated what the longest piece I need in the quilt will be (with the background fabric on it) I cut the first bit that that length and then just trim it down to fit the quilt block in both directions. I pin those two pieces to each designated block. Good to go when I am ready to chain piece them!<br /><br />I know my process is different than yours in that my blocks are a mix of sizes.
